Useful For
Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) is the blood transport protein for testosterone and estrogen.
Measurement is useful in monitoring the following conditions:
- Diagnosis and follow-up of women with symptoms or signs of androgen excess.
- Monitoring sex-steroid and anti-androgen therapy.
- Aid in the diagnosis of disorders of puberty.
- Aid in the diagnosis and follow-up of anorexia nervosa.
- Aid in the follow-up of thyrotoxicosis.
- Possible adjunct in diagnosis and follow-up of insulin resistance and cardiovascular type 2 diabetes risk assessment, particularly in women.
- Crucial in the assessment of the level of free testosterone when the free testosterone is determined by calculation.
Note: SHBG is included in Testosterone Total and Free (TESFT)
