Test Code TESFT Testosterone Total and Free

Performing Laboratory

Hunterdon Medical Center

Useful For

Total testosterone measurement is the primary tool for assessing hypoandrogenism. The majority of total serum testosterone (60%-90%) is bound to Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG) and unavailable to its target tissues. Most of the remaining bioavailable testosterone is bound to albumin, leaving approximately 0.5%-2% circulating in free form.

Free testosterone assessment is useful as a primary or secondary measure of androgen activity in men and women. Free testosterone is calculated using the measured levels of total testosterone, SHBG and albumin.
