Screening tool to determine the patient’s VRE colonization status upon admission.

Newly positive patient results will be called to the nursing unit.

Specimen Required

Dual tipped routine culture swab labeled with source: rectal.

Specimen Type

Rectal swab collected within the first three days of hospitalization.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Ambient 15-30°C: Deliver within 2 hours.

Protect from freezing or exposure to excesive heat.

Specimen Stability Information

Ambient 15-30°C: Deliver 24 hours.  

Refrigerate 2-8°C, stable for 5 days.

Reject Due To

  • Excessive stool present on swab.
