Special Instructions
Quantitative cultures of bronchial alveolar lavage (BAL) and protected bronchial brush (PSB) specimens can be useful in the diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia, pneumonia in immunocompromised patients and cystic fibrosis patients, acute exacerbation in COPD patients and in community acquired pneumonia.
Specimen Required
Sterile container.
1. BAL: 40-80ml of fluid.
2. PSB: place brush in 1.0 ml sterile non-bacteriostatic saline.

Specimen Transport Temperature
Ambient: Deliver within 2 hours.
If delivery is delayed: Refrigerate 2-8°C.
Specimen Stability Information
24 hours.

Bronchial wash specimen is not acceptable for this procedure.
