Useful For
This screening test detects the HIV-1 p24 antigen as well as antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2. Antibodies to HIV can be detected 6-12 weeks after infection. The HIV p24 antigen can usually be detected 6 days prior to a positive antibody response, if the viral load is sufficient.

Reference Values
Non-Reactive. A non-reactive result does not completely rule out the possibility of an infection with HIV.
Testing Algorithm
If HIV1/2 is reactive, HIV-1/2 Antibody Differentiation will be ordered at an additional charge. Reactive HIV-1/2 antigen and antibody screening test suggests the presence of HIV-1 and or HIV-2 infection; it is not diagnostic for HIV infection and should be considered preliminary.
