Molecular detection for Group A Strep

Specimen Type

Posterior pharynx and tonsillar areas and any areas if inflammation, ulceration or exudation should be sampled with a dual tipped routine culture swab.

 

Depress tongue with tongue depressor so the swab does not contact the oral mucosa or the tongue.

Specimen Required

Dual tipped routine culture swab. CSR Item #66819.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Hold at 2-27°C during transport.

Specimen Stability Information

Samples should be received in the laboratory as soon as possible for best clinical utility. May be held at room temperature for up to 48 hours.

Samples that will not be tested within this time should be refrigerated (2-8°C) for up to 7 days.

Reject Due To

Non-throat sources, specimens collected in gel swab transport systems.
