Test Code FTP Platelet Function Test
Performing Laboratory
Hunterdon Medical Center
Useful For
Platelet aggregation provides the first line of defense against bleeding. Even with a normal platelet count, the platelets may be dysfunctional due to congenital or acquired conditions. It is recognized that many drugs and compounds (prescription and non-prescription) may affect platelet aggregation. The most common of these is aspirin. It is important to obtain a complete medical history including a list of drugs taken 7-10 days prior to testing.
Inadequate platelet aggregation may lead to bleeding complications. As a result it may be desirable to assess platelet count and platelet aggregation in certain patient populations.
Special Instructions
Platelet Function Test (FTP) will be performed only if the platelet count is above 49 (10*9)/L. Sufficient platelets must be present to yield a functional response.
