Special Instructions

Source of specimen must be clearly indicated on the test order and the specimen container.

Tissue or fluid is always superior to a swab specimen.

NOTE: If aerobic and anaerobic cultures are ordered two separate specimens must be collected.

Anaerobic wound cultures are not performed on superficial sites. Fluid or tissue are superior specimens for anaerobic culture. Please click on link below for acceptable specimen types and collection requirements.

Specimen Type

1. Cleanse skin and mucosal surfaces using disinfectants.

2. For open wounds, debride necrotic tissue and rinse with sterile saline.

3. Sample viable infected tissue, not superficial debris or necrotic tissue.

Ambient: Deliver within 2 hours

Ambient:  24 hours
