Important Note

Nasal and nasopharyngeal specimens should not be used in an attempt to recover the etiological agent of a sinus infection.

Specimen Required

Dual tipped routine culture swab.

 

Collection Instructions:

  1. Insert swabs approximately 2cm. into the nare.
  2. Rotate the swab against all sides of the nasal mucosa, using a circular motion.
  3. Repeat the process in the other nare, using the same swab.

Specimen Type

Right and left nare.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Ambient: Deliver within 2 hours.        

 If delivery is delayed: Refrigerate 2-8C

Reference Values

No MRSA Isolated.

Pediatric cultures will note the presence or absence of Strep pyogenes.
