Specimen Required
External Ear Canal:
- Use moistened swab to remove any debris or crust from the ear canal.
- Insert culture swab into the ear canal until resistance is met.
- Rotate swab and allow fliud to absorb onto swab.
- Label with patient first and last name, medical record number, date and time of collection, source of specimen.
Middle Ear Fluid:
- Clean external ear with mild detergent.
- Using a syringe aspiration technique, fluid is apirated through the tympanic membrane.
- Label specimen with patient’s first and last name, medical record umber or date of birth, date and time of collection,specimen source.
- Send specimen to the lab in a sterile vial or in the capped syringe (needle removed).
- Anaerobic culture can be performed upon request provided the specimen is appropriately collected.
- If eardrum is ruptured, collect specimen by inserting a sterile swab through an auditory speculum.

Ambient: Deliver within 2 hours.
Specimen Stability Information
1. Middle Ear Fluid: Ambient: 24 hrs.
2. External Ear Canal: Refrigerate 2-8°C: 24 hrs.

Method Name
Conventional culture and Biochemical Identification methods; Gram stain is performed. Positive cultures may be followed by susceptibility at an additional charge.
If specimen is received in anaerobic transport media an anaerobic culture will be performed.
