Test Code ACTH ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic Hormone)
Performing Laboratory
Hunterdon Medical Center Laboratory
Useful For
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulates the formation and secretion of glucocorticoids (cortisol) by the adrenal cortex. Plasma measurements of ACTH are useful in the diagnosis of syndromes assoiated with hypercortisolism and hypocortisolism.
Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube | Pre chilled EDTA |
Specimen Volume | 3.0mL |
Minimum Volume | 1.0mL |
Specimen Type
Plasma
Specimen Transport Temperature
On Ice
Specimen Stability
- Collect specimen in a pre-chilled EDTA tube.
- Centrifuge specimen and separate plasma within 3 hours.
- Freeze separated plasma if not delivered to the laboratory within 3 hours.
Day(s) Test Set up
Monday through Sunday
Reference Values
7.2-63.3 pg/mL
- ACTH Reference values are valid for AM collections.
- There are no established reference values for PM draws.
Note: ACTH concentrations vary depending on physiological conditions. Therefore, ACTH results should always be evaluated with simultaneously measured cortisol concentrations.
Methodology
ECLIA: Electrochemiluminescence immunoassay
